Post your findings about censorship in terms of Book Banning, Propaganda, and Media manipulation

  1. Despite how we view ourselves as a country of free speech and ideas, many of our media are heavily censored or not published at all because of its questionable, inappropriate and violent contents.

In 2008, many great and even award winning novels were banned in America during the 2007-8 such as "The Shell Lady's Daughters" by Adler, C. S. because it contained adultery, suicide and deception of parental idols and American publishers worried it would cause commotion/problems for religious readers.
Another book banned and was challenged against was "Whale Talk" by Chris Crutcher because of this racial and segregating slurs, profanities, violence, sex and derogatory quotes.

The uses of censorship were used in great numbers during the 2nd World War. The two sides, Axis and the Allies depicted their enemies as cold-blooded murderers, rapists and thieves by illustrating or manipulating photos of Allies/Axis committing atrocious crime. Then they use the false photos as propaganda for the citizens to see how their government view their enemies.

Mass media manipulation is a type of censorship is a common practice by business owners to "tinker" with the truth or how terrible their business to give off an impressive look.
Many to all fast food franchisers use the 3 M's to promote their new product, the food that is seen on the screen was heavily painted and altered/censored to make it look like the best burger in the world. But in reality, what you see on the screen becomes ten times worse in real life.

Censorship is used quite often for many other and unexpected places such as mannequins, make ups and etc, to present to people what they think they look like if they had this product. Censorship's abundant in places we do not expect them to be.

    1. Yes, censorship is used in many ways. I know the food that is seen on the screen was heavily painted, but between the food and screen is not same when we order the food.

  2. Censorship in Media

There are many ways to be censor people in this world. As the technology has been developed, there more media sources available for us to get connected. In the history, mainly, books that were persuading the government/organization with political power, was banned from the society. Also, the propaganda was convincing people that war was adventurous to people, and made a lot of young men to apply for the army. Here are some examples that I am going to talk about it today.

First of all, most of the censorship comes from the government; mainly occur, because of their own greed. In the Second World War, Hitler’s Nazi government was censoring the broadcasting organization, to publish/play on the radio that Germany was having infinite victory, which gave hope and admirable thoughts to the people. However, the fact was that Germany was falling apart in the case of battles; they were pressured from East and West. According to German citizen from the past, they confessed that they never knew that Germany had lost war, until Adolf Hitler had committed suicide.

Second, the censorship that occurred from the past is still active in our life. In 2007, one of the most famous adventure book called Harry Potter was banned from seventeen states of America. The reasons for banning this book were; Harry Potter claims that the witchcraft is valid, which Christian thought it was unacceptable to read. Also in Canada, students were not allowed to write a book report about Harry Potter unless; they had their parents’ permission. Additionally, in twentieth century, one of the finest literatures, called Adventure of Huckleberry Finn was once banned from USA, because of informal, offensive and racism language. By the time, when this book was published, it had repeated a racism slur nigger in the book; therefore, it was banned for a moment.

Third, many movies and social entertainment shows were censorship, up to today. In 2008, one of the entertainment shows from Korea called Infinite Challenge received warning from the government, because they were making jokes, which persuaded the government’s policy. After this incident in Korea, all of the entertainment shows became timid, because if they get certain amount of warning from the government, they are forced to close the program.

To conclude this essay, censorship is required at the certain moment, where children need parents’ attention on inappropriate media sources. However, in terms of politics, government should be able to listen, and allow citizens to persuade about their policies and their political moves. If they do not listen to the citizens, who had elected them, then there will be a no meaning to the *democratic* government, in this world.

  3. These days, there are different kinds of censorship such as book banning, propaganda, and media manipulation. I researched ‘The Diary of a young girl’ by Anne Frank, which were banned in 1983 by the Alabama State Textbook Committee. The reason why the book were banned in USA is that even though this is the incredible story of an ever-hopeful and ever-wistful young girl who is eventually killed in the Holocaust, despite the girl incredibly horrible enemies and fate, this remarkable teenage girl still believes in “the basic goodness of mankind.”

In addition, I researched about propaganda. I thought North Korea has a lot of propaganda news, so I researched and found one of North Korea propaganda news. According to Jean H. Lee who is a journalist,
“PYONGYANG, North Korea: A framed poster on the wall of a kindergarten classroom shows bright-eyed children brandishing rifles and bayonets as they attack a hapless American soldier, his face bandaged and blood spurting from his mouth. "We love playing military games knocking down the American bastards," reads the slogan printed across the top. Another poster depicts an American with a noose around his neck. "Let's wipe out the U.S. imperialists," it instructs. For North Koreans, the systematic indoctrination of anti-Americanism starts as early as kindergarten and is as much a part of the curriculum as learning to count. Toy pistols, rifles and tanks sit lined up in neat rows on shelves. The school principal pulls out a dummy of an American soldier with a beaked nose and straw-colored hair and explains that the students beat him with batons or pelt him with stones – a favorite schoolyard game, she says.”
North Korea is the spreading of information to children.

Moreover, I researched about Media Manipulation. When people ordered food and ate it, people cannot believe the advertisement. Because when people saw the food picture and read the comment, it looks very delicious. For example, Tim Horton’s smoothie advertisement tells people that it is real fruit. However, the smoothie’s taste is like syrup. In addition, when LEGO advertise their product on TV, they used science fiction and the product is moving without people’s hands to looks interesting. Even though LEGO put ‘the product cannot move. And this is not real”, the font size is very small on TV.

Therefore, censorship has different types in the twenty-first century. Censorship is used many ways such as book banning, propaganda, and media manipulation.

    1. We both have the same Media Manipulation as food advertised on televisions are much worse when viewed in reality.
The food they showcase in commercials are heavily colored to look tasty as possible while hiding and censoring the real "personality" of the food

  4. Truth be told, there are three kinds of Censorship that are book banning, propaganda and media manipulation. These kinds of Censorship have frequently occurred around the world.

Firstly, as we know, book banning is the prohibition of publishing books that mention sexual, violent and/or political problems. This was a popular phenomenon in 1960s when the Vietnam War was happening. In such decade, the government planned to unite people’s ideology in communism. As the result, all political books that condemn the communism were banned including “1984” written by George Orwell. This “1984” strongly denounces the cruelness, deception and peremptoriness of the totalitarian government that is contrary the political ideals of the government. Additional, in 2004, Vietnamese still very strict about homosexuality. It is considered as disease and being unnatural. As a result, every book, music, movie that supports the right of homosexual people is totally prohibited, for example, novel “The Parallel” by Nguyen Hoai Nam or “Brokeback Mountain” the movie by Annie Proulx.

Secondly, propaganda and media manipulation have the same purpose which is spreading the information to influence people’s thinking, opinions. Usually, people use posters for propaganda and in media manipulation, internet, television and/or radio are used. We can easily see that in election. The president election in the US is a typical example. Candidates may use many ways to control people’s thought in the way that is beneficial to them such as make people believe they can help the country become better although it is not always true. Moreover, in ancient, Vietnam was under China’s control. Many Chinese came to Vietnam and use books, talking show to spread Confucius’s ideologies that support sexist, totalitarian government... As a result, for over a thousand year, Vietnamese has approved it and these ideologies have still existed up to now.

  5. The censorship of Harry Porter confuses me because we all know that magic is not real and such novel is just an imagination. I suppose that is harmless. Oh my goodness, I still can't believe it @@

  6. People express their opinion though different way, but some country choose to cover them for different reason. For instance, "Harry Potter" banned because of 'glorified witchcraft' could influencing Michigan people's beliefs and behaviors ; “The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne was banned because Conflicts with values of the community. More than the books, and the media, propaganda are still control over people's mind.

One of my favorite movie "Lifetimes Living" was banned in China mainland, even this movie won the 47th cannes international film festival jury award. Throughout the film without a positive portrayal of the communist party, and It condensed the history of personal destiny. Although this is ridiculous, destruction of human behavior, yet 'the cultural revolution' was really happened. However, the government choose as far as possible don't mention this huge mistake of Chinese history.

Now days, the media has the most influential part in the lives of the public, and mass media manipulation become very common. Pop culture could be the most prominent of all the media manipulators. The famous super stars are telling you how to act, should to do. They promoted the economic development, so government or organization could use them cover the truth. In China, there is a famous entertainment dating show called " Perfect". Originally, they should be sincerely on the show, but in fact, they all have the script. One of the guests post the truth on his twitter( Chinese twitter), but it was quickly deleted by manager of twitter. After that he was banned in the entertainment circle.

In addition, image also brings effect to people's life. It is really easy to change the story, put another background, change a color, and then will showing a much different image than what originally occurred.

In today's modern world, we know the media and censors have close relationship. Censorship is used in many ways and they have major influence.

  7. Only when we are no longer full stop substances are increasingly concerned about the idea in the mind, there will be some of the community have a different perception of the crowd. People around the world living in different circumstances,i think there will be differences, but the society will be dominated by large number of people. So there will have censorship, media manipulation, propaganda and so on.

In 2011 China had a large local traffic accidents. Events on high-speed rail, as was the scene of the incident in the high-speed rail, sinister environment so when the government decided to bury below the front for easy rescue. There are some people still alive in the train , because no timely rescue and death. It's something sparked anger so when network news, has collapsed. So now if you still have commented on the network is not conducive to the government's management of the news, or comment will be reviewed. So that when the government officials to give back to the people is a very irresponsible "Whether you believe it or not the government say, anyway, I believed" at the time this sentence is very popular in the network. Until now, people still often use these words to satirize others.

Not only in China, in other more developed countries, for example in the United States although their ideas are very open but the government still have to face such problems. Thoughtful art - graffiti. In the United States there is a graffiti style called Banksy, so far no one knows who is the founder of his. Since some graffiti too unfavorable government or pornographic content is not conducive to children as it has been unlawful.

However, there is still a lot of bold thinking artists doing this sort of thing. For example Mike Diana became the first American artist to receive a conviction for obscenity for drawing cartoons that were judged legally obscene.

Finally i want to say that. Censorship have many different types even thought we are live in a free expression of society, but we still need behave oneself.
