  1. Fist of all, I would like to talk about one of the most popular books, Twilight Series. As far as I know, lots of teenagers are crazy about it, so do I. However, such a popular book had been banned for a period of time in 2007, but it came back on the shelves soon. The reason why Twilight Series was banned was that there are considerable amount of scenes are violent, involving too many bloody murder, which some people thought it would be harmful for children’s psychological development. What is more, no one in the world ensures whether the vampires exist or not, so Twilight Series are exactly fictional. Just like teenagers can be attracted by several video games. Fictional books and games really brought hidden troubles to children. For instance, in China, in 2008, a junior-high school student died of jumping from a building. Did the boy want to suicide? No, the local polices explained for this reason why this boy jumped from a building is that he was lost between the reality and the illusion, and he thought he had the super powers as the unreal characters that only exist in the books and games. It was such an unbelievable reason, and many people promised that they would never do the same stupid thing. However, I confirmed that boy also had been confident enough before he was obsessed with fictional contents too much.
Secondly, “Brave New World”, written by Aldous Huxley, was banned in a large scale, and only in the Coeur D’Alene District, this book was allowed to sell. Speaking of the reasons, some official institutions explained that there were too many sex and drug content in this book, which might cause an increasing criminal rate.
Moreover, “How to eat fried worms”, written by Thomas Rockwell, was banned in La Paz and Indiana, because it encouraged children to engage in unacceptable behavior in daily life. In addition, profanity and the promotion of gambling also involved in this book.

    1. Wow, Kitty, these are amazing, I totally agree with your ideas and opinions. You also remind me of the tragedy of a junior boy, it totally shocked me. Books, have their dark sides as well, it depends on that if you have the common sense to judge the world, rather that to indulge in illusions.
Overall, my opinion is: when you are reading a book, instead of wallowing in its extreme plot, try to explore deeper meaning of each details. I am not defending that one cannot enjoy reading, I emphasize that: if the world was as perfect as the Utopia in books, there would never banned books exist.

    2. Great job,Kitty! Well,I've never heard about that boy news. It sounds very silly but I agree that it's something that can possibly happen when you are too much obssesed with such superstitious books like Twilight or Harry Potter. Although a lot of teenagers are crazy about them, it is kind of reasonable to ban these books.

  2. I choose first book is “Barriers to the Broad Dissemination of Creative Works in the Arab World” the book banned reason is a growing body of creative works by Arab authors and artists counters the intellectual and ideological underpinnings of violent extremism. Unfortunately, many of these works are not widely disseminated, marginalizing the influence of these alternative voices. This monograph examines the barriers to the broad dissemination of such works, with a focus on Arabic literature, and suggests ways to overcome these barriers. I think this book about media manipulation, so the government will banned it.
I choose second book is “Should Drugs Cheats be Banned for Life?” This book banned reason is each topic also acts as a springboard for a discussion of related issues. It provides a range of viewpoints to encourage critical thinking. It includes simple activities and exercises to provide practical advice and examples of critical and creative thinking skills. It contains a mixture of text types, including recounts, reports, discussions and persuasion text.
I choose third book is “Ending the Death Penalty: The European Experience in Global Perspective” the banned reason is Examining the successful movements to abolish capital punishment in the UK, France, and Germany, this book examines the similarities in the social structure and political strategies of abolition movements in all three countries. This book touch counties’ s law.

    1. I agree with you some books were banned for some extreme reasons. As youn said that"Ending the death penalty touch counties’ s law", it is a good reason that the book is supposed to be banned. However, such books can totally show people that how the world really looks like. To some extreme degrees, a book is even an evolution among in some currupted countries. No government wants to be overthrown. On the other hand, the authors of the banned books show their own opinions of the world or philosophy, as a result, people are not supposed to be affected by their ideas and thoughts.

    2. obviously, banned books disobeyed the media routine, and the government has to stop it. in my opinion, all the books are the mirror of the realistic world, and the stories, opinions, and feelings must have happened in our daily life. thus, books reflect the pros and cons of our life, but there are considerable cynics in the world, who may express wrong ideas to the public.

  4. Books that were banned in 2008:

To kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee : this book describes how Blacks are treated by the members of White Community. The resident refused to publish this book because this book might upset the black children who read it. Further, some discrimination can be expressed by the contents of this book, like racial discrimination and some arguing about Blacks and Whites because it is a bok dealing with the race in America.

The Joy of Sex, by Alex Comfort: A group marked that the contents of the book are harmful to some minors. It is defensive against the state laws. This book talks about the sexuality between a Japanese man and an Indian woman. In this book, a lot of sexual stuff had been described, like sexual positions and oral sexuality. So, this is the other reason why some schools reject to publish it. only the officials are allowed to bring it on the shelves. This book is written in1972, it was the age that strongly go against sexuality.

Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley: The School District objected to publish this book because tis book is related to too much sexuality and drug use. Brave new Wold is also a imagination, to other cases, it reflects the current political situation at the age, which is 1931, the government thought it might cause a evolution among the citizens. That is the main reason that this book is objected in libraries.

    1. i totally agree with you, because currently, more and more sexual and violent con ten involve in books. it is essential for governments take some actual actions, but the it is not necessary to be strict of banned books.

    2. I agree with you. But,I don't think it is that necessary to ban some great books like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Brave New World". Too much banning of the books can take away our chances of experiencing the world through reading. However, I partly agree with banning of "The Joy of Sex" since it has too much sexual contents which can be uneducational to young people.

  5. There are some well-known books that were banned in 2008 such as “The Golden Compass”, “Brave New World”, and “Twilight” due to some religious and immoral reasons. First of all, the book I’d like to talk about is “Golden Compass” which was banned mostly in Christian and Catholic schools since the book was written by an atheist. It is considered to have some atheistic messages of anti-God such as dealing with witchcraft. Throughout the story, both God and the church are depicted as evil: God is depicted as evil as well as Church, called as Magisterium, is described as an evil place of turning innocent children into little zombie soldiers. So, the story is about the quest to kill God and God is eventually killed at the end. Such harsh anti-God message brought a strong feeling of hatred of the book from the Christian and Catholic people. Because of the author’s aim to convert children to be athiest, religious schools decided to ban the book. I don’t want to be too subjective but as myself being a Christian, I agree with its reason for banning. Next, the book, “Brave New World” was also banned in 2008 due to its too much themes of sexuality, drugs, and suicide which could be immoral and uneducational for young people. Beside these themes, it was banned for many reasons such as its languages, its elements of anti-family and religion and making sex look like fun, as well as its focus on negativity of the world. Lastly, Twillight, the one of the most popular books among teenagers was marked as one of the dangerous books for young people due to its sexual, violent, and bloody contents. But mainly, similar to the reason that Harry Potter was banned, Twilight was considered superstitious which goes against religious beliefs since religious people don’t believe in such existence of vampire and consider it demonic. But it was loved by many teenagers for having lot of thrill and romance. All in all, although those had banned books have some reasons for religion, immorality, and anti-social in past years, most of them are popular now.

    1. Wow, Eunice , you have a lot of ideas about banned books. I have the same sense about that if a book contented sexual information and private matters of governments, it supposed to be banned since it is not benefit for teenagers. Moreover, this is the first time I hear about the religion stuff. In my opinion, books related to religious conflicts should be only published in other countries without too much religious attention. Banned books only reflect the authors' opinions, rather than going against their political system and state rules.

    2. Hi Eunice, you focused on talking about the religious books that were banned, and i think all of the authors don't have the right to object the specific religions. however, we can use books to communicate, to show our different ideas.

  6. Emily Bronte

Emily Bronte who was a famous English author of the book, “The Wuthering Height” was born and raised in Thornton, Yorkshire, England, on August 20, 1818. She was the fourth daughter of Patrick and Maria Bronte among her sisters, Anne, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Maria and her brother Patrick who later became an artist. But, sadly, their mother died of a cancer and Emily and Charlotte were in charge of taking care of younger children. Bronte children were mostly taught by their father who had a great influence on Emily and her sister, Charlotte on shaping their mind of literature. Since her family lived in an isolated village, Emily Bronte seldom has a social contact with the local people. So, whenever she was forced to visit somewhere far away from her home she suffered from the homesickness. Also, because of such isolated environment, Bronte children spent their times mostly in imaginary worlds writing poems and tales. Emily’s only novel, “The Wuthering Height” was not well-received when it was published at the first time. But, later, after Emily died, the book was republished by her sister, Charlotte with a new introduction.
