The novel Life of Pi written by Yann Martel is about a boy named Piscine Molitor Patel or "Pi" Patel who was named by his swimming enthusiast uncle Francis, who urged Pi's father to have his 2nd son swim at the Piscine Molitor Hotel in Paris, where he may have a clear soul and the pool's water was crisp and fresh enough "to make your morning coffee".
He earned his nickname "Pi" as he resided in Pondicherry during his childhood, and his fellow student made mockery of Pi's name, so in order for people to remember Piscine with a different alias, he impresses his whole school by memorizing the number pi.
A story of a boy who is shipwrecked and stranded with a wild Bengal tiger who survives sounds ridiculous and stupid when first hearing about it, but when reading the story and how much he suffers to keep him and a giant tiger alive seems believable.
Pi is a fascinating character and protagonist, as he learns to love 3 different kinds of religion that competes with each other and praises God, not Allah, not Vishnu nor Jesus, simply God. Even in his childhood, he is an symbol of open-mindedness, hope and wits. He obeys all laws of religions and practices, while respecting others. He brings reasons with his open-mindedness as when the 3 religion "leaders" fight, he only claims he wants to love god.
Pi Patel stands for hope too as even he is reluctant to leave India and Anandi, he hopes he may find life as great in Canada then he does in Pondicherry. He also clings to hope one day he would be rescued while stranded on a boat with Richard Parker, a wild Bengal tiger, despite losing everything that is dear to him.
Finally, he is an icon of wits despite being famished, tired and with little supplies, he manages to train Richard Parker on a boat with great patience and care.
Questions:
How would you think Pi's life would play out if his ship never sunk? Would his relationship with religion be the same?
Why is he not angry at the gods/god? If they are to destine everything in the world, then why did Pi's ship sink?
1)In my opinion, “Life of Pi” is a good story mainly discussing about Pi’s adventure on the sea which a tiger, Richard Parker after a violent storm. “Life of Pi” indicates the strength and creation of human in harsh condition. For example, Pi created a small raft to keep safe from the tiger in the early time and his ability to train the tiger to become his friend. The story also mentioned about the harmoniousness between human and animal especially when Pi and Richard helped each other to survive on the sea.
2) When watching the movie, I found it a little bit hard to understand Pi’s English. In some parts, characters also communicate in Indian and make me confused. I have to confess that at the very early moment, I used to think that this movie was so boring. However, when Pi’s ship started to sink, I was attracted more. During the movie, I could not stop asking myself what would happen to Pi and felt sorry for him. After Pi managed to intimidate to tiger, I think I was as happy as Pi was. When the journalists from Japan came to interview them about the adventure, I got angry because they did not believe in Pi at all and the way they refused his story was ridiculous. I could not believe how they could think that the story with the animals was a lie.
3) As we watched the movie together, I have 2 questions for you guys: - Is it a good idea that Pi did not kill the tiger in the first moment despite its dangers? Why or why not? - According to the movie, Pi had used to want to abandon his life before he came to the island. Why did he leave it when he had figured out its plants are carnivores even though he had not wanted to live?
From your question 'Is it a good idea that Pi did not kill the tiger in the first moment despite its dangers? Why or why not?'
In the first, he did try to kill the tiger by restricting him on the boat (which did not work at all) but since he did not kill it, it was a bad idea at first, taking control of the boats and its supplies but later on, Richard Parker keeps Pi Patel at his edge all the time because the responsibility to feed and care for tiger is tremendous. So yes it was a good idea to keep Richard Parker alive
‘Life of pi’ is a fantasy adventure novel by Yann Martel published in 2001. The novel has sold more than then million copies worldwide. In addition, in 2012, the novel was adapted into a theatrical feature film directed by Ang Lee with a screenplay by David Magee. Thus, I was interested in the novel and movie. When my G12 English class chose the novel, I was glad about it. Today, I watched ‘life of pi’ movie in my English class after discussion of chapter one of ‘life of pi’ novel. I realized several perceptions of the story, my mind, and two questions for my friends to answer while watching the movie.
First of all, I noticed ‘life of pi’ movie has several means. The story of movie mentioned religion, culture, survival, death, family, friend, and communication with animals. The reason why the movie mentions those is that those were a movie for action of Pi’s survival. Death of Pi’s family helps to survive him on the ocean by making strong heart. Pi had religions, which are Hindu and Christian. On the ocean, he said and prayed to god of Hindu and Christian. Moreover, he had a friend who is a tiger named Richard Parker. Even though Pi could not communicate with Parker like human and there was problem between human and animal at the beginning, he communicated with Parker through feeling. Parker was Pi’s friend on the ocean.
Second, the movie was brought to my mind that mind of people according the way of thinking. Some doctors said that the main cause why people usually die in uninhabited island is mental problem. They said people die because of mental problem before the stubbing. There is story about mind of people: Saint Wonhyo who is a famous journey the Korean Buddhist 1,300 years ago has a famous story. “Legend has it that he and fellow spiritual seeker Uisang, took shelter from a storm in an old tomb they thought was a cave. During the night Wonhyo became thirsty and began searching on the ground for a gourd of water. He found one and picked it up and drank deeply from it. The water was sweet and refreshing and he slept deeply until dawn. In the morning he discovered that the vessel he had drunk from was not a gourd but a human skull. It was not filled with sweet, clean water but instead was full of dirty rainwater, rotting meat and maggots. He was so revolted by what he had drank that he fell on his knees and vomited” (3WM, 2011). Likewise, Pi survived on the ocean for a long time. (There is more story about Wonhyo: http://thethreewisemonkeys.com/2012/09/03/expats-begin-trek-across-peninsula-on-second-wonhyo-pilgrimage/)
Third, I have two questions to my friends to answer. One of question is that “What do you think how Pi could survive on the ocean?” Other question is that “Do you believe that Pi stayed with tiger named Richard Parker on the same boat for a long time in realistic?”
In conclusion, ‘Life of pi’ movie referenced religion, culture, survival, death, family, friend, and communication with animals. In addition, the reason why the movie mention it that it is reason of Pi’s survival. Moreover, I realized the movie said that mind of people according the way of thinking. Thus, I made two questions and would like to ask the questions to my friends. The movie reminded me a lot of thinking.
Yes, if Pi's father is alive, they will kill the tiger. Q1: If I was Pi, I will ride the boat alone when Richard fell off the boat. Because Richard can hurt me. Q2: I think a friendship between human and animal is possible. There are a lot of story about it in the world. I love animal; however, I prepare human friend more than animal friend.
On the surface, this movie is talking about a teenager's adventures, in fact, there are hides a lot of metaphor.First, the adventures of Pi and tiger is illusory. Until Pi tell us the other story, and that led the whole story together. The orangutan= Pi's mother, the zebra=sailor, the hyena=cook, and Richard Parker=Pi himself. Which means cook ate sailor's body and then killed Pi's mother, that led Pi get angry and he killed cook. So, i was thinking the two stories which one is the real one? However, In the end of movie, writer and insurance agents both chosen the one with tiger. I think they chose that one because they would like to believe in this incredible experience, rather than put the bloody truth in front of people, and it gave me a wonderful fantasy.
There is one more thing i want to talk about it. Ang Lee like to use a different metaphor to strengthen the relationship. Except Pi and tiger, there is one more relationship that is not easy to find out which is Mother and lotus. At the beginning of the movie, Pi's mother painting a lotus on the floor and shown to Pi. The second time is when Pi overlooking the sea, he saw the fish form the lotus and then into his mother's appearance. So, lotus is the representative of Pi's love for his mother. After Pi and Richard Parker reached a mysterious floating island, he picked a lotus and then open it, there is a human tooth inside the lotus. Therefore, tooth in the lotus represents Pi's mother's death, and the whole island is Pi's mother's body. On the island, Pi ate the plants roots, Richard Parker ate the meerkats. So, is that mean Pi eat his mother's body? There is one more place make me confuses, Pi told the writer the tooth is from a man who died because of the acid under the island. Is that mean hydrochloric acid in gastric juice? What do you think? Which stories are you believe in?
The film 's main character is a boy named PI, who had believe of three different religions. His father owned a zoo. At a point, their family needed to move to Canada and to sell the animals to live. But when the storm hit the ship they are on, he lost the family. He experienced a journey of faith which is incredible. Who could imagine the feeling of a 16-year-old Indian boy who lost all his relatives? He was with a tiger and spend 227 days on the sea rafting, by relying on very strong willpower and survival skills, he survived. How strong was the power of faith.
He had experienced two storms. At the first time he lost his family. While he was drifting at sea he finally began to understand. At the second one, a day of turmoil made PI completely collapse. Although he was a vegetarian but in order to survive, he gradually began to eat meat. But in his heart he had a sense of guilt for the gods who do not encourage killing for meat. When PI wad hopeless and helpless in the storm he shouted out. I seem to feel that nothing can describe the despair and loneliness released in the outbreak. I think human beings, in that case, could do nothing. After that period of the natural universe under the stars, it was as if they were telling us, "even if human civilization fails, the cosmos is still so wonderful and wide." Despair became a hope. I seem to have some unique perception in regards of this film. Religion is something he used to save himself. Pi successfully survived with faith more powerful than his own will to live. In his experience, his faith is blocking the only obstacle to living undef. But at the end, he went farther. There seemed to be no way to be saved. Life is so tangled, because of the swing between not only reason and emotion, but also moral and instincts to fight. We have to accept it, and live with it. Perhaps the significance of religion is in this. Humanity will not change because of their faith, but faith, because of human nature, is able to shine。
questions If you are PI,will you still have faith after all this difficulties? If your name is ridiculed by classmates, how would you make them pay attention to you?
The Life of Pi is a story based on a Tamil boy’s tragic adventure. In the novel, there are two main characters which are Pi (Piscine Patel) and Richard Parker. During the survival, the bond between the Bengal Tiger and Pi becomes steadfastness as the time goes by. It truly showed me about how humans can be positive at harsh environment.
While I was watching the movie, the thought came up to my mind, which was; in any situation, even though you or I am suffering though the harsh situation, there are always plan for the afterward. Hi Thomas, For your first question, honestly, I think if I were in Pi's situation, I wouldn't have enough strength to survive on the sea with a tiger even though I try my best. For your second question, I think he left Pi behind because of the fact that Richard is a tiger, not a pet like dogs or cats. He didn't really know about relationship with human. However, since he had been in the zoo for a very long time, when he saw the jungle, he was so happy and forgot Pi.
