  1. My understanding of Censorship, before the discussion.

Before our discussion about censorship, my understanding about it was the government officials or the leader of the certain organization, controlling the media sources, to hide their secrets. Mostly, the censorship occur in the communist government, such as Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and North Korea. In the history, there was a clear incident which happened because of the censorship. In Germany, Colonel Von Stauffenberg, tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler at Berlin, the media was censored and announced, that Adolf Hitler is still alive. They have censored this event, and tried to give faith to Nazi soldiers.
As everyone knows today, Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler faced tragic ending of the War.
So in this example from the history, I thought that censorship would be benefit to keep country united instantaneously, however it would not last for the long time.

  2. What was your understanding of censorship before the discussion, and how was your idea changed through the in class discussion?
In fact, censorship is a new word for me, and after I had looked up it in the dictionary, my intuition was that censorship has such a general definition with regard to rules. However, it is really difficult for me to understand what rules are exactly, since I just need to obey school rules and transportation rules every day. Moreover, as a teenage girl, I preferred to consider the entertainment or sports news before. Thus, I have to admit that I even wasn’t able to identify the concept of censorship before, and I have to admit that after researching on the internet, and in-class discussion, I got much more clear ideas about censorship today. First, it will be easier for me to organize all of the thoughts by defining censorship into two major groups that one is social-censorship,which includes state- owned countries and different governmental departments, and the other one is self- censorship, which includes private companies and individuals. Either one type of censor is able to protect us, but in my eyes, censorship is a double-edged sword, which has not only pros, but also cons. For instance, if censorship is overspent, which will block the free flow ideas, which is the point for the development of human-being. Also, some improper censorship may invade people’s privacy. In addition, sometimes, the governments just use censorship as an excuse for hiding what they are actually doing from citizens, but we do have the right to know what happens to our country. In all, it is hard to balance the pros and cons, which weigh more, so just use it judiciously.

  3. Question #1: Before the discussion, I thought censorship is the action that the government or responsible organizations prohibit things that were considered to be offensive, immoral, or related to a political threat. Moreover, there were three kinds of censorship, according to my country system, including governmental, familial, and scholastic censorship. In terms of familial censorship, also the most important one since families are roots of community, husband usually prevent his wife from meeting strangers or hang out with her friends too frequently because his wife is supposed to stay at home and look after her family rather than hanging out. Additional, parents also prohibit their kids from making friends who neither concentrate on studying nor have bad familial theme. The reason is parents believe these people will negatively influence their children. Secondly, about scholastic censorship, teachers sometimes avoid teaching sexual knowledge, especially biology teachers. The last kind of censorship, the governmental censorship, is the widest one because the government controls all the country from politics, entertainments, culture.

Question #2: Throughout the discussion, I recognized the three kinds of censorship were not general enough for other countries rather than Vietnam thanked to Kitty’s ideas. According to Kitty, censorship should be separated into 2 kinds which are public censorship and self-censorship. Public censorship concerns my governmental and scholastic censorship because the fact is the government also influences schools. Self-censorship is more personal because it occurs within family or is created by individuals to control themselves. My understanding of censorship has become more specific because Thomas, Huong, Brian, Clare and Eileen’s examples from their own countries and their own experiences.

  4. After Discussion about Censorship

While our class was having a group discussion about censorship, we talked mainly about different types of censorship. We came up with these two types; Public and Private Censorship. Public censorship, is what we know in the society, which government officials controlling/censoring the media sources. However, I have realized that the censorship could also occur in the house. For example, we talked about, Vietnam families, how their parents censors their children to make a good friends; in terms of good friends, they meant friends who prefer to study than playing. I never knew that the censorship could occur in family relationship. Therefore, throughout this discussion, I have learned how censorship could effect the family relationship, and it could cause the internal and external conflict.

  5. Q1-I understood of censorship before the discussion is that a government control public communication in society. For example, a government controls speech, book, music, art, television, movie, and radio. Moreover, I thought a totalitarian government is a typical example of censorship. Because a totalitarian government is one that tries to control every aspect of life: how people spend every minute of their time even in private, who they can associate with, what they are allowed to say. Totalitarian government even tries to control what people think, and what they believe. Likewise, George Orwell’s ‘1984’ show a totalitarian. For example, ‘BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU’ means that the government is watching the citizen in ‘1984’. In addition, I thought that censorship has strength and weaknesses. In strength part, if a government controls cigarette and alcohol, citizen will be protected. In weaknesses part, each person has his or her own opinion; however, a government does not want to citizen talk about harmful and sensitive story to the government. Thus, sometimes, censorship is an exercise in power. A government is not trying to control people’s mind for some other purpose. A government just wants to exercise total power over people’s minds.
Q2-I did not change my idea about censorship through the in class discussion. Because the discussion was similar with my idea. However, I added some idea about censorship. I just thought social censorship; however, I started think about individual censorship like family censorship.

  6. Before the discussion i thought the censorship was just about movie and drama. The producer and staffs of a brand new drama have to do lots of preparations to make their work successfully done. Not only script choosing, videos recording, and post production are needed, but also the censorship. The new drama or movie has to be sent to censorship apartment to check. As a resolute I find more information about censorship on bad way. For example the government building the erect for the masses, there only have the positive news come out.but on that time still has many news about the homicide case or the government audit was embezzlement that will not through the review.
