  1. Part 3: Reading Journal (Connect & Question)
    Response 1: Guiding Questions
    1. The story was set in 1960s in America, and I knew it from reading Chapter 1 in which the author introduced the setting.
    2. There are three main characters in this novel, and the whole story was told in Ponyboy’s point of view. Ponyboy was fourteen-year-old, and he had two older brothers, the oldest brother called Darrel, and the second oldest brother called Sodapop. Unfortunately, the three boys’ parents died in a car accident, so Darrel undertook the parents’ responsibilities, which caused Darrel lacked the sense of being humorous. Ponyboy really loved Sodapop, because Sodapop never shouted at Ponyboy, and he was willing to spent time with Ponyboy. Talking of Ponyboy, he had a light-brown, almost red hair and greenish-gray eyes. In addition, Ponyboy liked reading books and watching movies. In my opinion, all of the three boys are disciplined children, because they help each other to make a living without parents, they treated people friendly, and they were judgmental.
    3. Bob was a secondary character in “The Outsiders”. As far as I know, where Ponyboy lived was a dangerous area, and it was divided into East side and West side. Rich people lived in West side, and they were called “Socials”. Well, in the East side, people like Ponyboy who didn’t have high social status lived there, and they were called “Greasers”. Bob was the leader of one young “Socs” gang who was hard drinking, cruel, and he always bullied Greasers. The reason why Bob was essential for this story is that his existence creates the main conflict in this story since Ponyboy and Sodapop had to escape to a far church to live, and experienced the following suffering. Thus, Bob was the direct cause of the story.
    4. I would like to talk about the relationship between Ponyboy and his second oldest brother, Sodapop. Ponyboy narrated he loved Sodapop more than his parents. Without any doubts, Sodapop was a responsible brother who found out and solved the worries for Ponyboy. Ponyboy loved him, because he was willing to listen to, to share, and to comfort. The reason why I think their relationship is important since family affection is one of the main themes for the story. During the story, they escaped to a far church together, and they confronted lots of troubles together. However, they never gave up, because their special relationship, and they cherished each other so much.

  2. the scarlet letter
1.The scarlet letter is an 1850 romantic work, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
    2. The main character is Hester Prynne. She is young woman. Because of she found guilty of adultery. She must wear a scarlet “A” on a sign of shame.
3.Roger Chillingworth he is a small, misshapen man. And he is Hester’s long-lost husband, who has been presumed lost at sea.
    Dimmesdale is reverend.
Pearl is a complex character, her primary function within the novel is as a symbol.
    4.Chillingworth is Hester’s husband.
    Dimmesdale is her lover.
Pearl is her daughter with Dimmesdale.
5.Hester lives a quiet, somber life with her daughter, Pearl. She is troubled by her daughter's unusual character. As she grows older, Pearl becomes capricious and unruly. the church members suggest Pearl be taken away from Hester. From this event we can found Hester is incompetent mother for Pearl’s education.
6.In my opinion, I think I can use guilt. Everyone want to do a legalism. But everyone will make sin in their life. They will guilt for their sin. Such as Hester, I think she is a hero at that time. She protect her lover and raise her daughter, Pearl.
    7. I think the novel based on Chillingworth vows to find a man who is the child’s father.
8.In the story, Hester has been found guilty of adultery. By the other way, that relaters to real life, I think the people is really traditional thinking at the Hester’s time. She just wants her happiness. But Hester cannot do it for social ethics. Now, everything is different. We can find own happiness.
9.In my opinion, I connection the story made with character relationships, the story still around Hester’s sin, Chillingworth’s revenge, and Pearl’s grown, Dimmesdale’s guilt.
    10. What is Hester's role in society? What is her view of this role?
    Who is the greatest sinner?
What is meant by the title "the minister`s vigil"?
How has Hester's appearance changed ?
What does Roger Chillingworth make Hester promise to him?
A: He asks that Hester not reveal who he is or that they are husband and wife.

  3. 5. Bob was accidentally killed in a vacant lot is the direct cause for the following plots because Greasers and Socials didn’t like each other, and Bob, as the leader of Socials, his death represented the relationship between Greasers and Socials would become worse and worse. Moreover, of course, since Socials always bullied Greasers, they would revenge Greasers.
    6. The culture involved in this story is level of differentiation, which represents that social status determines everything. For instance, rich people lived in West side, and poor people lived in East side, which shows that people were materialistic at that time. “The Great Gatsby” shows the same culture that people who have lots of money seem like having everything.
    7. In this novel, I feel love is so great. Love is one of the most common affection in the world. Love concludes friendship; romance, family ties, and love even exist between strangers who help each other by the motivation of being touched or compassion. The reason why Sodapop and Ponyboy were able to be alive in a far church is that many people helped them by giving money, bringing food, and even fighting for them.
    8. I would like to talk the event that Sodapop protected Ponyboy when Bob was bullying Ponyboy. In real life, one of the most ordinary consensuses is older brothers are always able to help the younger timely.
    9. I would talk about “the Great Gatsby”, because these two novels have some similarities since both authors focused on describing the luxury cars and clothes that some rich people have. In my opinion, lots of rich people involved in these two novels thought that owning money equaled owning everything, so they had the power to bully or laugh at others ceaselessly.
    10. 1) Do you think Bob’s parents will revenge to the oldest brother, Darrel?
    2) Do you think the police worked effectively and efficiently at that time?
    3) Why Greasers persist in maintaining their long hair even though others always laughed at them?
    4) Do you think “Socials” have real friendship compared with the friendship between “Greasers”?
    5) How do you think Ponyboy’s future after he found out Sodapop’s death?
    6) In the end of the story, Ponyboy found a slip of paper that Sodapop left in the book, “Gone with the wind”, so what do you think was written on the paper?
    7) The book, “Gone with the wind” was mentioned of many times in this story, why?

    1. The story in this novel takes place in Victorian Age in Canada, written by Margaret Atwood. Victoria age is the age that MALES abuse their rights and authorities to FEMALES. This story is rearranged accordance with the real person because the main character, Grace Marks, had been one of the notorious female murderers in the sixteenth century in Canada. She had once suffered from mental disorder.

    2. Grace Marks, the main character in this novel. She is an extreme pretty girl. Her family emigrates to Canada. She suffers from her early-age-loss of beloved mother, abusive treatments from father, and scorns from her housekeeper. She undergoes a great deal of trauma in her childhood. Her murder towards her housekeeper is a mystery. The first impression of her is: pure, silent, and vigilant.

    3. Doctor Simon, one of the fact-finding committee, who explores Grace's secrets, has been involved in complexity: sexual, duality, love, family relationship and his own future. He believes Grace is innocent.

    4. Doctor Simon is Grace's private doctor. Doctor Simon cares about Grace's history and tries to fix her trauma and personality split. In addition to his formula, he has a bright future on his career of physiology. Grace Marks can be a good case for him to investigate.

    5. Grace Marks describes her only friend Marry Whitney died in the house due to abortion. The windows are closed. As a result, instead of flying out of the room, it flies into Grace's body. From now on, Grace has double personalities: one is Grace, the other if Marry Whitney. So, it is mystery for us: Does Grace really kill her housekeeper?

    6. One of the traits in this novel mentions: the government is corrupted. They usually abuse the money from people to do private stuff. In addition to this, same as other novels, women are stereotype weak; social conflicts are never end.

    7. When I first read the early chapters, I feel mysterious and the air is full of bitterness. At the beginning of the novel, it describes that Grace is in jail, we don't know how grace is going to be treated.

    8. Too much trauma can cause physical and mental disorder.

    9. Mental disorder is caused by some extreme stimulation from events and violence. Mental illnesses are hard to be cure. We never know if these medical treatments are legal to patients.

    10. Is Grace the murder of her housekeeper? Why is Grace released from the jail, is Grace an exception in the history of crime? Does she love her housekeeper? Is Grace cured at the end of the novel? Is hypnosis a legal way to fix mental disorder?

  6. 1.The story takes a place in New York City around 1950s and the book was written in 1951 by J. D. Salinger

2.Holden Caulfield is a protagonist of the story who has a short, grey hair with a thin body. Since he’s from a wealthy family, he always dresses up nicely and his red hunting hat is a distinctive part of his clothing. He is an intelligent, wise, sensitive sixteen years old boy who has just been expelled from Pencey Prep School. He narrates the story in cynical and criticizing tone about how he doesn’t understand and dislike the world around him. Because he has a strong desire of keeping innocence, he is wavering between a childhood and a corrupted adult world.

3.Stradlater is a secondary character. He is Holden’s roommate at Pencey Prep who is athletic, handsome, and popular. He’s a contrasting character to Holden because he behaves equally as others no matter it’s right or wrong. Also, unlike Holden who is lonely because of his pursuit of innocence, Stradlater is popular and blends in with most of students at school. By Houlden, he is called as “secret slob” and a “sexy bastard”. The first reason is because he seems clean and well-dressed but he’s actually disgustingly unclean and the second reason is that unlike Houlden, he’s sexually active and experienced.

4.Phoebe Caulfield-a ten years old younger sister of Holden and she's the only one who listens and understands him. Her childish innocence is one of Holden’s only consistent sources of happiness.

Allie Caulfield-Holden’s younger brother. He used to be the smartest boy among Caulfield childs but was unfortunately dead by leukemia but Holden still admires him.

    D. B. Caufield-Holden's older brother who has a lot of talents in writing stories.

5.The important event of the story is when Holden loses his innocence and descends into the life of drugs and prostitution.

6.Although the story happens around 1950s in America, a lot of things that happen in the story are not so much different from today because we can still see the same corruption of youth and adults. In today’s world, people seem to be a lot more dishonest and the young people’s culture becomes even more disorderly.

  7. 7. I don’t think growing up really means the loss of innocence because I’ve seen quite many adults who try to keep it. I feel sympathetic and pitiful for the main character, Holden. He is a wise sixteen years old boy that has a strong sense of right and wrong and has a critical eyes of viewing the corrupt world. He always tries to keep his innocence and struggle through his transition from childhood to corrupt adulthood. According to the book, he says, “sex is something I really don’t understand.’ This kind of thought and mind makes him lonely and isolated from the group of people in his age. Nobody around him seems to understand his thinking except for his younger sister, Phoebe. Like this, through some life experiences, I realize that something that is right and moral can be seen as strange in today’s corrupt society and sometimes, being innocence can mean solitary. The moral person and its corrupted society are just like oil and water which never mix in together.

    8. Holden watches the ducks in the Central Park Lagoon worrying where they would go during the winter.
But, nobody seems to care about it. It shows that unlike Holden, who has a very genuine, youthful, and warm heart of loving animals and every little things, a lot of people these days are mostly into worldly and materialistic stuffs.

    9. My similar thought and opinion with the main character helps me to understand the story better. Like Holden, I used to have a lot of times thinking about the corruption and irrationalities of human society. Also, Holden’s quote, “sex is something I really don’t understand,” is something that I agree with. I know that “sex” itself is not bad but I think having it before a marriage is inappropriate since it is written as a sin in Bible.

    10. 1) Do you think all teenagers should read this book?
    2) Does growing up really mean the loss of innocence?
    3) What metaphor does it have on the title,
    “The Catcher in the Rye?”
    4) What do you think both ducks and the pond represent?
    5) What do you think Holden's grey hair represent?
