  1. Reading Response2

1.The story sets in early 1950s in New York City. Even if the place and time change, the events happening in the story wouldn’t change that much since the story has a generic topic of corruption of people and society. For example, sex, dishonesty, materialism are things that still exist in everywhere these days. Also, the narrator’s critical tone of the world will not be changed.
    2. The overall mood is dark, depressing, sarcastic, critical and judgmental. Holden is the one telling the story, so his tone is the story’s tone. Such tone emphasizes the conflict between Holden, himself and the society and his painful feeling of viewing the world.
3.There are some contrasts between the main character, Holden and his roommate, Stradlater. Both are young man and from wealthy families and attending Pencey Prep school. But, while Stralater is good-looking, athletic, popular and behaves the same way as everyone does, Holden is neither good-looking nor athletic as well as cynical and anti-social. Unlike Stradlater, he’s a lonely boy who prefers to spend time away from people and doesn’t conform to the society.
    4. i) Holden has a conflict with his teacher, Mr. Antolini. He never tries to understand him and thinks of everything in his fixed idea. He thinks that the reason why Holden is lonely is he doesn’t have an ability to fit in to people, not because of his being different from people.
ii)The book is mostly about the conflict between Holden and himself. He has a hard time dealing with everyday life and feels that everyone around him is phony. This leads him to be introverted and left out from the outside world and later into his mental breakdown.
iii)Holden has a big conflict between himself and the society. He dislikes his surrounding because everyone he sees is phony, dishonest, and corrupt. He cannot accept these things so he can't communicate with anyone except for his sister, Phoebe.
    iv)There is no conflict
    v) There is no conflict.
5.The narrator is a protagonist, Holden Caulfield and he’s inside the story because the story is all about his inner struggle. Because he’s a narrator, he is the one who gives a mood to a story which is critical, dark, and depressing.
    6. The book is written in the first person, Holden. Because of his colloquial languages, it makes the story sound like his monologue. So, it makes reader to understand and view every event in his perspective.
    7. In the story, people view Holden as a crazy and abnormal person who need a mental therapy. But, I think in truth, it’s the other way around. The real crazy ones are people and society who only appreciate a dirty pleasure over what is really right or wrong. They don’t know what is really normal as a human and they take normal as abnormal.
8.“I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff—I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.”
This passage really attracts me because it’s the most significant quote of the book and reveals the deep meaning of the title. Because he has already become impure, he wishes to catch children from the falling off the cliff.” It means that he has a strong desire of protecting children’s innocence from corruption of the world, especially his sister, Phoebe. This reflects his innocence, his belief in pure, uncorrupted youth, and his desire to protect that spirit.

  2. 1. For the middle chapters, the place in Alias Grace changed. Grace Marks' memories flash back to the place of her employment. Since Grace had been locked in the Asylum due to her involvement in the murder of her employer and housekeeper. However, Grace Marks' past and her mental disorder are caused in her childhood. Her employer, Thomas Kinnear, is the victim of her. His house is not only the place she got employed but also the area murder happened. The spiritualists try to consider the trauma in her childhood.

    2. In the middle chapters, the general feeling is mysterious because we have not known about whether Grace is the murderer. Moreover, the up-and-coming expert, Dr. Simon Jordan, has his own affair with his landlady Ms. Humphrey, he is confused by his own sentiments. As a result, sexual element is one of the key clue to help me explore more about Grace's story.

    3. The characters I choose to compare are the Governor's wife and Nancy Montgomery. Both female characters have high social status. But both characters treat Grace Marks with different behaviours. For the Governor's wife, she treats Grace with as a lady; as for Nancy, she treats Grace hard, because she thinks Grace might love Mr. Kinnear; the Governor's wife is an intelligent woman with her sagacity, while Nancy is the housekeeper relying on Mr. Kinnear, they are not couple. Nancy has to work hard on Mr. Kinnear's house. While the Governor's wife only needs to investigate crimes with her husband. Nancy thinks about Grace "lately become quarrelsome"; as the Governor's Wife, Grace is "tidy and handsome".

    4. 1)Grace and Nancy: both characters have fight because Nancy always suspects that Grace might grab the love of Kinnear but Grace never thinks about it.

2)Dr. Jordan always struggle among his own sentiments: he doesn't know how to arrange his own motion about love, or he can hardly recognize what is corruption, what is love.
    5) Grace's duality appeared since her loss of her mother figure Marry Whitney's death. "I'm not Grace, my name is Marry Whitney" said "Grace".

    5. In the middle chapters, Grace Marks is the narrator. She is involved in this novel since she is the murderer of her housekeeper and the employer. She talks about her past before she became a murderer.

    6. this book is written in both first narrator and third narrator. By using both narrative ways, it shows the social background and its cultural identity.

    7. in these middle chapters, I have a feeling that rash loves always lead people to corruption, In these middle chapters, from chapter12 to chapter24, these eleven chapters describe main characters involved in emotional issues and they paralyzed. People are easy to get corrupted.

    8. “When I was younger I used to think that if I could hug myself tight enough I could make myself smaller, because there was never enough room for me, at home or anywhere, but if I was smaller, I might fit in.” (P 33) I choose this quotations, because it totally shows the other aspects of a murderer. According to psychologist, most murderers have their own internal inhibitions. They release them through murder. Grace has her own constraint as well. She wants to protect herself so that no one will hurt her anymore.

  3. Part 3: Reading Journal
    Response 2 Guiding Questions

    1. In the outsiders, the place changed. Because
Sodapop killed Bob involuntarily when he tried to protect Ponyboy, Ponyboy and Sodapop had to escape to a church that was far away from their home. Before, theses three boys lived in their uncapacious but cozy home, but after Bob’s death, they had to live in different places that
Darrel stayed in their home so that he was able to inquiry about the policemen process and continued earning money here, and Ponyboy and weren’t allowed to take a step out of church.
Talking of how does this switching serve the story, I think family affection was described fully. For instance, Sodapop ran a risk for getting food and a famous book, “Gone with the wind” to satisfy his younger brother. Moreover, Darrel came that far, from their home to the church, just for seeing his brothers were good, and every time, Darrel left almost all his salaries to Ponyboy and Sodapop.

    2. In my opinion, this book brought a cozy mood to me even though these boys were orphans, and I think Ponyboy contributed a lot to this mood. For instance, when Ponyboy blamed Darrel always had a serious face, imagine the scene, a younger brother complained and became sulky even though they quarreled sometimes, their love was eternal, and their help was momentary. In addition, in the church, Sodapop stared at Ponyboy who has already fallen in asleep in his arms. It was definitely a cozy scene even though they were in a trouble; they wouldn’t forget to enjoy the time with family members.

    3. I will compare and contrast Ponyboy and Sodapop. First, the similarities between Ponyboy and Sodapop, both of them were Greasers, so both of them had a longer compared with other boys because this was one of their traditions, and since they weren’t rich, so they always wore T-shirts and blue jeans. From the heart, their life was filled with fear since they were Greasers who were always bullied by Socials. Also, both of them were disciplined children that they tried to avoid troubles even though they hated Socials.
However, they were so different in other words. Darrel had countless concerns because he was the oldest child and his two younger brothers needed him to support. Thus, his mind was full of two ideas that one was how to earn more money, and the other one was how to provide them better protection and life. In a word, Darrel was very mature inside. In contract, Ponyboy was childish since he didn’t have many practical concerns, and all he concerned was when Darrel would have some spare time with him. Darrel worked in a smoke filled, which surprised me because he was a disciplined boy and he should be a good model for their brothers, and Ponyboy, such a naughty and naïve child was addicted by the book, “Gone with the wind”.

    4. The conflict between Sodapop and Bob was the main cause of the whole story since Sodapop and Ponyboy had to escape far away.

  4. 5. Ponyboy was the narrator of the whole story, and he was one of the main characters. This character was the cause of the story because his brothers fought, escaped and finally died for protecting him.
    6. The book was written in the first person with Ponyboy’s point of view. I think this is a wonderful choice because Ponyboy was humorous, and from his words, even serious Darrel became a little bit funny. Also, because Ponyboy was only 14 years old, and his several reactions were naïve, which made me worried a lot when I read it. All in all, it makes the whole story much more addictive.

    7. As Ponyboy said that he loved Sodapop more than his parents, which proved their relationship was so intimate. I, as the only child of my family,I would admire to have a older brother like Sodapop too because he could share the books and movies with me, and I could receive lots of sense of safety from him, just like what Sodapop did for Ponyboy.

    8. I found the phrase “half-conscious” appeared in the novel many times. In the literal sense, “half-conscious” means that someone is partially alert or awake. This phrase was used to describe one of the Ponyboy’s friends who was hit by Socials, the reason why I chose this phrase was that it is an ideal phrase to indicate people’s status at that time. The poor Greaser hit by Socials was scared to death, and he wasn’t able to talk even though all his companions were surrounding him. There’s another reason that I chose this phrase. To some degrees, this phrase was able to illustrate people’s train of thought since their district was divided into East and West parts, and people living in the district even hated each other instead of being good neighbors. In my opinion, this is ridiculous. Thus, everyone was half-conscious all the time because no one dared to point out how stupid their behaviors was, and everyone tacitly consented to such a terrible condition.

  5. 1.If time change, I think Hester just will break a marriage. And she will begin new life with her lover, Dimmesdale. In Hester’s time, the people have traditional thinking. They cannot stand adultery happen.
2.Hawthorne's generative image for the novel was that of a woman charged with adultery and forced to wear the letter A upon her clothes, but upon wearing it, decided to add fancy embroidery as if to appropriate the letter as a point of pride.
3.I want to compare about Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. They have comment for they are Hester’s man. Dimmesdale is her lover. Chillingworth is her husband when she live in England. We can know when her husband listen about her and is told the story of his wife’s. he is really anger he want to punished vows to find the man. By the other hand, Dimmesdale use his belief to convincing himself at every stage of his spiritual pilgrimage that he is saved.
4.For two people, I think is Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. Chillingworth is Hester’s husband. But Dimmesdale is Hester’s lover. For society, How Hester chooses not to conform to their rules and beliefs.
5.I think the narrator is Hester. She is inside the story and she is main character.
6.The book written that 4 persons – namely Hester, Pearl, Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. Hester has been found guilty of adultery. And Pearl is her daughter with Dimmesdale. Chillingworth is her husband in England. The affect is told people get lover by himself.
7.The story give me know that if you want to get belong to your love. You need to be a brave person. On the book, Hester must stand on the scaffold for three hours, exposed to public humiliation. But she always refuse tell people who is her daughter’s father.
8.“Mother,” said little Pearl, “the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. . . . It will not flee from me, for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!” “Nor ever will, my child, I hope,” said Hester. “And why not, mother?” asked Pearl, stopping short. . . . “Will it not come of its own accord, when I am a woman grown?” the conversation form chapter 16. We can know that little Pearl because of her mother, so she still life alone he want to get friends. This is so pity.
